I recently made a video on YouTube comparing 4 popular 4X scopes from the past. Though I don’t specifically dig into the specs and details of each one, for the reader, it is nice to have a video comparison as well as a side by side comparison of these vintage optics. This isn’t the most scientific test ever devised, but there are a few clear takeaways that are to be noted: every one of them is more than acceptable for casual hunting or plinking use. In today’s day and age where you have to wonder about the cost and warranty of various offerings, it’s nice to know there are still vintage pieces out there that have stood the test of time, and many of them can be had for pretty reasonable prices.

The Leupold ($250-$300) does hold some collector premium, but you still get the Leupold warranty so perhaps that’s part of the value proposition related to its price. The Lyman and Weaver can both be had for $100-$150 on the secondary market, and though no longer supported by their parent companies, parts are readily available and they are easily taken apart and worked on. Lastly, the Japan made Tasco still proves to be an incredible no frills optic for the price, for less than $100 you can get an optic suitable for many roles without the stress of having a rare vintage piece should it fail. Each optic serves a different role at a different price range, but once again, all perfectly usable.
